케임브릿지 사전은 'go against the grain'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If something goes against the grain, you would not usually do it because it would be unusual(어떤 것이 go against the grain 한다면, 그것이 특이하기 때문에 대체로 당신은 그것을 하고 싶어 하지 않는다는 뜻이다)."

"These days it goes against the grain to show too much respect for authority(요즘 권력에 너무 큰 존경을 보이는 것은 자연스럽지 않다)."

콜린스 사전은 'go against the grain'을 이렇게 설명했다.
