케임브릿지 사전은 'neck and neck'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If two competitors are neck and neck, they are level with each other and have an equal chance of winning(두 경쟁자가 neck and neck 하다면, 서로 동등한 수준이며 이길 확률이 둘 다 똑같은 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'neck and neck'을 이렇게 설명했다. "In a competition, especially an election, if two or more competitors are neck and neck, they are level with each other and have an equal chance of winning(경쟁에서, 특히 선거에서, 두 명 이상의 경쟁자가 neck and neck 하다면, 서로 같은 수준이고 이길 확률이 둘 다 똑같은 것이다)."
