케임브릿지 사전은 'repercussion'을 "the effect that an action, event, or decision has on something, especially a bad effect(어떤 행동, 사건, 또는 결정이 다른 것에 미치는 영향, 특히 부정적인 영향)"라고 정의했다.

"Any decrease in tourism could have serious repercussions for the local economy(관광 분야의 축소는 지역 경제에 심각한 영향을 끼칠 수 있다)."

"President Kennedy's assassination had far-reaching repercussions(케네디 대통령의 암살은 광범위한 영향을 끼쳤다)."

콜린스 사전은 'repercussion'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If an action or event has repercussions, it causes unpleasant things to happen some time after the original action or event(어떤 행위나 사건이 repercussions를 가진다면, 그 행위나 사건 이후 어느 정도 시간이 지난 후 불쾌한 일들이 일어나도록 초래한다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.
