[영어 공부] vocation(천직, 소명) 

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'vocation'을 "a type of work that you feel you are suited to doing and to which you should give all your time and energy, or the feeling that a type of work suits you in this way(자신이 하기에 적절하며 자신의 시간과 에너지를 모두 주어야 한다고 느끼는 종류의 일, 또는 어떤  종류의 일이 이러한 방식으로 자신에게 어울린다는 느낌)"라고 정의했다.

"I feel I've found/missed my true vocation(내 진정한 천직을 찾았다는/놓쳤다는 느낌이다)."

"Most teachers regard their profession as a vocation, not just a job(대부분의 교사들은 그들의 직업을 그저 단순한 일거리가 아니라 소명으로 여긴다)."

"To work in medicine, you should have a vocation for it(의학 분야에서 일하려면 그에 대한 소명 의식이 있어야 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'vocation'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you have a vocation, you have a strong feeling that you are especially suited to do a particular job or to fulfil a particular role in life, especially one which involves helping other people(vocation이 있다면, 자신이 특별히 어떤 특정한 일을 하기에 적절하다거나, 삶에서 특정한 역할, 특히 다른 이들을 돕는 일을 포함하는 역할을 충족시키기에 적절하다는 느낌을 강하게 느끼는 것이다)."

"It could well be that he has a real vocation(그가 진짜 천직을 찾은 것일 가능성도 높다)."

"Diana was convinced of her vocation to provide support for her pupils.(다이애나는 제자들을 지지해 주는 것이 자신의 천직이라고 확신했다)"

맥밀란 사전은 'vocation'을 "a job that you do because you feel it is your purpose in life and for which you have special skills(자신 삶의 목표라고 느끼고 그걸 할 특별한 기술이 있다고 느끼기에 하는 일)"라고 풀이했다.

"Mason regarded teaching as his vocation(메이슨은 가르치는 일을 천직으로 여겼다)."

"She believes she has found her true vocation in life(그녀는 삶에서 진정한 천직을 찾았다고 믿는다)."
