케임브릿지 사전은 'compulsory'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If something is compulsory, you must do it because of a rule or law(어떤 것이 compulsory하다면, 규칙이나 법 때문에 해야만 하는 것이다)."

"Swimming was compulsory at my school(수영은 우리 학교에서 필수로 배워야 했다)."

"The law made wearing seat belts in cars compulsory(그 법은 차량 안에서 (탑승자가) 의무적으로 안전 벨트를 매도록 했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'compulsory'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is compulsory, you must do it or accept it, because it is the law or because someone in a position of authority says you must(어떤 것이 compulsory하다면, 그것이 법이거나 권력을 가진 이가 강제하기 때문에 그것을 하거나 받아들여야 한다는 뜻이다)."

"In East Germany, learning Russian was compulsory(동독에서는 러시아어를 필수로 배워야 했다)."

"School uniform is no longer compulsory in many British schools(많은 영국 학교에서 교복은 더 이상 필수가 아니다)."
