케임브릿지 사전은 'under your breath'를 "quietly so that other people cannot hear exactly what you are saying(다른 이들이 당신이 정확히 뭐라 말하는지 알아들을 수 없을 정도로 조용하게)"이라고 정의했다. 

"He muttered something under his breath(그는 작은 소리로 뭐라고 중얼거렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'under one's breath'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say something under your breath, you say it in a very quiet voice, often because you do not want other people to hear what you are saying(어떤 것을 under your breath 말한다면, 아주 조용한 목소리로 말하는 것인데, 대개는 다른 이들이 당신이 하는 말을 듣기를 바라지 않기 때문이다)."

"Walsh muttered something under his breath(월시는 조그맣게 뭐라고 중얼거렸다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'under your breatth'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if you say something under your breath, you say it in a very quiet way so that it is difficult for people to hear(어떤 것을 under your breath 말한다면, 그것을 아주 조용한 몫소리로 말해서 다른 이들이 듣기 힘들 정도인 것이다)"
