케임브릿지 사전은 'hedge'를 이렇게 정의했다. "To hedge is also to try to avoid giving an answer or taking any action(hedge 하는 것은 대답을 하거나 행동을 취하는 걸 피하는 일이다)"

"Officials continued to hedge on exactly when the program would begin(공무원들은 그 프로그램이 정확히 언제 시작할지에 대해 계속 얼버무렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hedge'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you hedge, you avoid answering a question or committing yourself to a particular action or decision(hedge 한다면, 질문에 대답하거나 특정한 행동을 취하거나 또는 결정을 내리는 데 책임을 지기를 피하는 것이다)."

"They hedged in answering various questions about the operation(그들은 그 작전에 대한 다양한 질문에 대답하기를 피했다)."

''I can't give you an answer now,' he hedged('지금은 대답할 수 없습니다.' 그는 얼버무렸다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'hedge'를 "to avoid answering a question or making a decision in a definite or direct way(확실하거나 직접적으로 질문에 대답하거나 결정을 내리는 것을 피하다)"라고 풀이했다.
