케임브릿지 사전은 'outlay'를 "an amount of money spent for a particular purpose, especially as a first investment in something(특정한 목적, 특히 어떤 것에 처음 투자하는 데 드는 돈의 양)"이라고 정의했다.

"For an initial outlay of $2,000 to buy the equipment, you can earn up to $500 a month if the product sells well(장비를 사는 데 드는 초기 비용 2,000달러에, 제품이 잘 팔리면 한 달에 500달러까지 벌 수 있다)."

"Few are able to afford the cash outlay(현금 경비를 지출할 수 있는 사람은 거의 없었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'outlay'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Outlay is the amount of money that you have to spend in order to buy something or start a project(outlay는 무엇을 사거나 프로젝트를 시작하기 위해 들여아 하는 돈의 양을 말한다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'outlay'를 "the amount of money that you must spend in order to buy something or to start a new business or project(어떤 것을 구입하거나 새로운 사업 또는 프로젝트를 시작하는 데 들여야 하는 돈의 양)"라고 풀이했다.
