케임브릿지 사전은 'unseemly'를 "not seemly (= socially suitable and polite)(적절하지(=사회적으로 적절하고 예의바른) 않은)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'unseemly'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone's behaviour is unseemly, you disapprove of it because it is not polite or not suitable for a particular situation or occasion(어떤 사람의 행동이 unseemly하다고 말하면, 그것이 예의 바르지 않거나 특정한 상황 또는 때에 적절하지 않기에 이를 못마땅하게 여기는 것이다)."

"It would be unseemly for judges to receive pay increases when others are struggling(다른 이들이 허덕일 때 판사들이 급여 상승분을 수령한다면 부적절할 것이다)."

"...unseemly drinking, brawling and gambling(...부적절한 음주, 싸움, 그리고 도박)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'unseemly'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "unseemly behaviour is embarrassing or upsets people because it is not suitable in a particular situation(unseemly한 행동은 특정한 상황에 적절하지 않기에 수치스럽거나 타인을 화나게 하는 것이다)"

"They descended into a rather unseemly argument about money(그들은 돈에 대한 다소 부적절한 논쟁으로 빠져들었다)."
