콜린스 사전은 'cut and run'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone cuts and runs in a difficult situation, they try to escape from it quickly and gain an advantage for themselves, rather than deal with the situation in a responsible way(어려운 상황에서 cut and run 한다면, 그 상황에 책임을 가지고 대처하기보다 재빨리 도망치고 자신에게 이득을 얻으려고 노력하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)하고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 표현이다.

"...his cowardly decision to cut and run(...그곳에서 도망치려는 그의 겁쟁이 같은 결정)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'cut and run'을 "to leave quickly in order to avoid danger or trouble(위험이나 골칫거리를 피하기 위해 재빨리 떠나다)"이라고 설명했다.

"You can't just cut and run when your friends are in trouble(친구들이 곤란한 상황에 처했을 때 그저 도망칠 수는 없는 법이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'cut and run'을 "to get out of a situation when it becomes too difficult or unpleasant(어떤 상황이 너무 어렵거나 불쾌해졌을 때 거기에서 빠져나오다)"라고 풀이했다.
