케임브릿지 사전은 'dish the dirt'를 "to tell people unpleasant or shocking personal information about someone(어떤 사람에 대해 불쾌하거나 충격적인 개인 정보를 사람들에게 말하다)"이라고 정의했다,

"She agreed to dish the dirt on her ex-husband for a large fee(그녀는 큰돈을 받고 전남편에 대해 험담을 하기로 합의했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'dish the dirt'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone dishes the dirt on you, they say bad things about you, without worrying if they are true or not, or if they will damage your reputation(당신에 대해 dish the dirt 한다면, 그것이 진실인지 아닌지, 또는 당신의 명성에 피해를 입힐지를 걱정하지 않고 당신에 대해 나쁜 말을 하는 것이다)." 대체로 영국식(mainly British)이고 인포멀(informal)하며 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 표현이다.

맥밀란 사전은 'dish the dirt'를 "to tell people what you know about someone, especially things that could damage their reputation(어떤 사람에 대해 당신이 아는 것, 특히 명성에 피해를 입힐 수 있는 것들을 사람들에게 말하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
