케임브릿지 사전은 'cotton on'을 "to begin to understand a situation or fact(어떤 상황 또는 사실을 이해하기 시작하다)"라고 정의했다.

"I'd only just cottoned on to the fact that they were having a relationship(그들이 사귀고 있다는 사실을 그제야 막 알아차렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'cotton on'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you cotton on to something, you understand it or realize it, especially without people telling you about it(어떤 것에 cotton on한다면, 특히 다른 사람들이 당신에게 이에 대해 이야기해 주지 않는 상황에서 그것을 이해하거나 알아차리는 것이다)." 영국식(British)이고 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"She had already cottoned on to the fact that the nanny was not all she appeared(그녀는 보모가 겉보기와는 완전히 다르다는 사실을 이미 알아차렸다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'cotton on'을 "to begin to realize or understand something(어떤 것을 알아차리거나 이해하기 시작하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Suddenly I cottoned on – she’d been lying from the start(나는 갑자기 그녀가 처음부터 거짓말을 해 왔다는 걸 알아차렸다)."

"It took him a while to cotton on to what I was saying(그가 내가 무슨 말을 하는지 알아차리기에는 시간이 좀 걸렸다)."
