케임브릿지 사전은 'inundate'를 "to give someone so much work or so many things that they cannot deal with it all(누구에게 일을, 또는 무언가를 아주 많이 주어서 전부 감당하지 못할 정도이다)"이라고 정의했다.

"We have been inundated with requests for help(우리는 도와 달라는 요청을 너무 많이 받았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'inundate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that you are inundated with things such as letters, demands, or requests, you are emphasizing that you receive so many of them that you cannot deal with them all(편지, 요구, 요청 같은 것으로 inundate 된다고 말하면, 그것들을 너무 많이 받아서 다 감당할 수 없다는 사실을 강조하는 것이다)." 강조(emphasis)하는 표현이다.

"Her office was inundated with requests for tickets(그녀의 사무실에 표를 원하는 요청이 많이 들어왔다)."

"They have inundated me with fan letters(그들은 팬 레터를 엄청 많이 받았다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'inundate'를 "to send or provide much more of something than someone can easily deal with(어떤 사람이 쉽게 감당할 수 있는 것보다 더 많이 어떤 것을 보내거나 제공하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"We’ve been inundated with calls from angry listeners(우리는 화난 청취자들에게 전화를 감당 못 할 정도로 많이 받았다)."
