케임브릿지 사전은 'slur'를 "words intended to insult someone or injure someone's reputation(어떤 사람을 모욕하거나 그 평판을 떨어뜨리려는 의도를 가진 말)"이라고 정의했다.

"He apologized for shouting an ethnic slur at a fan(그는 팬에게 인종적인 욕을 크게 소리친 점에 사과했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'slur'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A slur is an insulting remark which could damage someone's reputation(slur는 사람의 평판을 해칠 수 있는 모욕적인 발언이다)."

"This is yet another slur on the integrity of the Metropolitan Police(이것은 런던 경찰청의 진실성을 모욕하는 또 다른 욕설이다)."
