케임브릿지 사전은 'prerogative'를 "something that certain people are able or allowed to do or have, but is not possible or allowed for everyone(특정 사람들은 할 수 있거나 하도록, 또는 가지도록 허락되지만 모든 이들에게 가능하거나 허락되지는 않은 것)"이라고 정의했다.

"Alex makes all the big decisions - that's his prerogative as company director(알렉스는 중요한 결정을 다 내린다. 그것이 이 기업의 대표 이사로서 그가 가진 특권이다)."

"Skiing used to be the prerogative of the rich, but now a far wider range of people do it(스키는 부자들의 특권이었으나, 이제는 더 많은 이들이 스키를 탄다)."

콜린스 사전은 'prerogative'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is the prerogative of a particular person or group, it is a privilege or a power that only they have(어떤 것이 특정한 사람 또는 그룹의 prerogative라면, 그것은 오직 그들만이 가진 특전 또는 권력이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Constitutional changes are exclusively the prerogative of the parliament(헌법 개정은 의회가 독점한 특권이다)."

"It is your prerogative to stop seeing that particular therapist and find another one(그 특정한 치료사 말고 다른 치료사를 구하는 것은 당신의 특권이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'prerogative'를 "a right that a particular person or group has(특정한 사람 또는 그룹이 가진 권리)"라고 풀이했다.

"It’s the manager’s prerogative to decide who will be employed(누구를 고용할지를 결정하는 것은 매니저가 가진 특권이다)."
