케임브릿지 사전은 'ensnare'를 "to catch or get control of something or someone(어떤 사람이나 사물을 잡거나 통제하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Spiders ensnare flies and other insects in their webs(거미들은 거미줄로 파리와 그 외 곤충들을 잡는다)."

"They wanted to make a formal complaint about their doctor, but ended up ensnared in the complexities of the legal system(그들은 그 의사에 대해 정식으로 항의하고 싶었으나, 사법 체계의 복잡함에 빠져 버리고 말았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ensnare'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you ensnare someone, you gain power over them, especially by using dishonest or deceitful methods(어떤 사람을 ensnare 한다면, 특히 부정직하거나 속이는 방법을 이용해 그들에 대한 통제력을 얻는 것이다)."
