케임브릿지 사전은 'resign yourself to sth/be resigned to sth'을 "to make yourself accept something that you do not like because you cannot change it(바꿀 수 없기 때문에 싫어하는 것을 받아들이도록 마음을 먹다)"이라고 정의했다.

"While he's still a partner, he's resigned to writing off his investment(그는 여전히 파트너이지만, 체념하고 자신의 투자금을 버렸다 생각한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'resign oneself (to)'를 "to submit or become reconciled (to); accept (something) passively(항복하거나 어쩔 수 없이 받아들이게 되다; (어떤 것을) 수동적으로 받아들이다)"라고 설명했다.

맥밀란 사전은 'resign oneself (to something)'를 "to accept that something unpleasant must happen and that you cannot change it(어떤 불쾌한 일이 일어나야만 하고 그걸 바꿀 수 없다는 사실을 받아들이다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"He has resigned himself to the fact that his marriage is over(그는 체념하고 자신의 결혼 생활이 끝났다는 사실을 받아들였다)."
