케임브릿지 사전은 'complacent'를 "feeling so satisfied with your own abilities or situation that you feel you do not need to try any harder(자신의 능력이나 상황에 아주 만족해서 더 노력해야 할 필요를 느끼지 않는)"라고 정의했다.

"a complacent smile/attitude(자기만족적인 미소/태도)"

"We can't afford to become complacent about any of our products(우리는 우리 제품에 안주할 만한 여유를 부릴 수 없습니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'complacent'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A complacent person is very pleased with themselves or feels that they do not need to do anything about a situation, even though the situation may be uncertain or dangerous(complacent한 사람은 자신에게 아주 만족해서, 상황이 불확실하거나 위험할 수 있음에도 불구하고 상황에 대해 어떤 것도 해야 할 필요를 느끼지 못하는 사람이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"We cannot afford to be complacent about our health(우리는 현재 건강 상태에 안주할 여유를 부릴 수 없다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'complacent'를 "too confident and relaxed because you think you can deal with something easily, even though this may not be true(이것이 진실이 아닐 수 있음에도 불구하고, 어떤 것을 쉽게 대처할 수 있다고 생각하기 때문에 자신만만하고 편안한)"라고 풀이했다.

"These results are good, but we cannot afford to be complacent(그 결과는 좋지만, 이에 만족할 여유를 부릴 순 없습니다)."
