'get the lay of the land'라고 하는 것은 미국식, 'get the lie of the land'라고 하는 것은 영국식이다. 뜻은 동일하다.

메리암웹스터 사전은 'lay of the land'를 "the arrangement of the different parts in an area of land : where things are located in a place—often used figuratively(어떤 지역 내 다른 부분들의 배치; 어디에 무엇이 위치해 있는지 — 자주 비유적으로 쓰인다)"라고 정의했다.

"She knew the lie of the land from hiking through it daily(그녀는 매일 하이킹을 해서 형세를 잘 안다)."

"It takes time for new employees to get the lie of the land in this department(새로운 직원들이 이 부서가 돌아가는 모양을 파악하려면 시간이 걸린다)."

콜린스 사전은 'get the lay of the land'를 "to find out the details of a situation or problem(어떤 상황이나 문제의 세부 사항을 알아내다)"이라고 설명했다.

"I'm not sure what's going to happen. That's why I'm coming in early. I want to get the lay of the land(무슨 일이 일어날지 확신이 안 가요. 그래서 일찍 온 거예요. 상황이 어떻게 돌아가는지 파악하고 싶어요)."

맥밀란 사전은 'the lie of the land'를 "the way a situation is developing(상황이 발전해 나가는 형상)"이라고 풀이했다.
