케임브릿지 사전은 'incidental'을 "less important than the thing something is connected with or part of(그것이 연결되거나 일부인 것보다 덜 중요한)"라고 정의했다.

"Try not to be distracted by incidental details(부수적인 세부 사항에 주의를 뺏기지 마십시오)."

"The points you make are true, but they're incidental to the main problem(당신이 말하는 요점은 사실이지만, 그것은 주요 문제에 부수적인 것입니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'incidental'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If one thing is incidental to another, it is less important than the other thing or is not a major part of it(어떤 것이 다른 것에 inciental하다면, 그것이 그 다른 것보다 덜 중요하거나 그것의 주요 부분이 아닌 것이다)."
