케임브릿지 사전은 'on ice'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If a plan is on ice, a decision has been made to delay it for a period of time(어떤 계획이 on ice 하다면, 일정 기간 동안 그것을 연기하는 결정이 내려진 것이다)."

"Both projects are on ice until the question of funding is resolved(두 프로젝트 모두 자금 문제가 해결될 때까지 연기됐습니다)."

"The company plans have been put on ice until it decided what its next move might be(그 기업의 계획은 다음 조치가 무엇이 될지 결정할 동안 지연되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'put something on ice'를 "to postpone something(어떤 것을 연기하다)"이라고 설명했다.

"Plans have been put on ice for a meeting in London of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council(유엔 안전보장 위원회의 다섯 영구 회원국들이 런던에서 회의를 가질 계획이 보류되었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'keep/put something on ice'를 "to delay doing anything about a plan or idea(어떤 계획이나 아이디어에 관해 행동하는 일을 미루다)"라고 풀이했다.

"The whole deal was put on ice when the stock market fell sharply(주식 시장이 급락하자 거래는 전부 지연되었다)."
