케임브릿지 사전은 'astute'를 "able to understand a situation quickly and see how to take advantage of it(어떤 상황을 재빨리 이해하고 어떻게 그걸 이용할 수 있을지 알 수 있는)"이라고 정의했다.

"an astute investor/businesswoman(약삭빠른 발명가/여성 사업가)"

"his astute handling of the situation(그의 약삭빠른 상황 파악)"

"an astute observer of human behaviour(인간의 행동을 약삭빠르게 관찰하는 이)"

콜린스 사전은 'astute'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as astute, you think they show an understanding of behaviour and situations, and are skilful at using this knowledge to their own advantage(어떤 사람을 astute하다고 묘사하다면, 그들이 행동과 상황에 대한 이해력을 보이며 이 지식을 본인에게 이득이 되는 방향으로 이해하는 데 능숙하다는 뜻이다)."

"She was politically astute(그녀는 정치적으로 영악했다)." 

"He made a series of astute business decisions(그는 영악하게 일련의 사업 결정을 내렸다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'astute'를 "good at judging situations and people quickly and able to use this knowledge for personal benefit(상황과 사람을 재빨리 판단하기를 잘하고 이 지식을 개인적 이득을 위해 쓸 수 있는)"이라고 풀이했다.
