케임브릿지 사전은 명사 'shortlist'를 "a list of people who have been judged the most suitable for a job or prize, made from a longer list of people originally considered, and from which one person will be chosen(원래 고려된, 더 긴 목록의 사람들로부터 선택되어 마지막에 한 사람이 정해질, 어떤 일이나 상에 가장 적절하다고 판단된 사람들의 목록)"이라고 정의했다.

"We've drawn up (= decided) a shortlist for the job(우리는 그 일에 맞는 최총 후보자들의 명단을 정했습니다)."

"She's on the shortlist for a first novel prize(그녀는 처음으로 소설 상의 최종 후보자에 올랐다)."

콜린스 사전은 명사 'shortlist'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone is on a shortlist, for example for a job or a prize, they are one of a small group of people who have been chosen from a larger group. The successful person is then chosen from the small group(어떤 사람이 예를 들어 일이나 상을 위한 shortlist에 올라 있다면, 그들은 더 큰 그룹에서 선택된 작은 그룹의 사람들 중 한 명이다. 이 작은 그룹에서 성공적인 사람이 선택된다)."
