케임브릿지 사전은 'sanitize'를 "to change something in order to make it less strongly expressed, less harmful, or less offensive(어떤 것을 덜 강하게 표현하거나, 덜 해롭거나, 덜 모욕적으로 만들기 위해 바꾸다)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'sanitize'를 이렇게 설명했다. "To sanitize an activity or a situation that is unpleasant or unacceptable means to describe it in a way that makes it seem more pleasant or more acceptable(불쾌하거나 받아들이기 어려운 어떤 행동이나 상황을 sanitize하는 것은 그것을 더 유쾌하거나 더 받아들일 만하게 만드는 방식으로 묘사하는 것이다)."
