케임브릿지 사전은 'doyenne'을 "the oldest, most experienced, and often most respected woman involved in a particular type of work(특정한 종류의 일에 관련된 여성 중 가장 나이가 많고, 가장 경험이 많으면, 대개 가장 큰 존경을 받는 여성)"라고 정의했다.

"The party was held in honour of Vivienne Westwood, that doyenne of British fashion(그 파티는 영국 패션의 여성 원로인 비비엔 웨스트엔드에게 경의를 표하기 위해 열렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'doyenne'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you refer to a woman as the doyenne of a group or profession, you mean that she is the oldest and most experienced and respected woman in it(어떤 여성을 한 그룹 또는 직업의 doyenne이라고 칭하면, 그녀가 그 분야에서 가장 나이가 많고 경험이 많으며 존경받는 여성이라는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)하고 긍정적인(approval) 뉘앙스이다.

"...the doyenne of British fashion(...영국 패션의 여성 원로)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'doyenne'을 "the most respected and famous woman in a group or profession(한 그룹이나 직업에서 가장 존경받고 유명한 여성)"이라고 풀이했다.
