케임브릿지 사전은 'jump through hoops'를 "to have to do a lot of things that seem difficult or unnecessary in order to achieve something(어떤 것을 성취하기 위해 어렵거나 불필요해 보이는 일을 많이 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"We had to jump through hoops to get my Dad admitted to hospital(우리 아빠를 병원으로 데려다 드리기 위해 여기저기서 시키는 대로 해야 했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'jump through hoops'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone makes you jump through hoops, they make you do lots of difficult or boring things in order to please them or achieve something(어떤 사람이 당신으로 하여금 jump through hoops 하게 한다면, 그들을 기쁘게 하기 위해서, 또는 어떤 것을 성취하기 위해서 어렵거나 지루한 일을 많이 하게 하는 것이다)."

"He had the duty receptionist almost jumping through hoops for him. But to no avail(그는 당직 접수 담당자를 거의 고생시켰지만, 소용은 없었다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'jump through hoops'를 "to perform a series of difficult tests to show that you are suitable for something(당신이 어떤 일에 적합하다는 것을 보이기 위해 일련의 어려운 시험을 수행하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"There are so many hoops to jump through that a lot of people give up(이것저것 해야 할 일이 너무 많아서 많은 이들이 그냥 포기한다)."
