케임브릿지 사전은 'overtone'을 "something that is suggested, but is not clearly stated(암시되지만 명확히 말해지지는 않은 것)"라고 정의했다.

"The concert was supposed to be a charity event but it had strong political overtones(그 콘서트는 자선 행사가 되어야 했지만, 정치적인 함축이 강했다)."

"There was an overtone of regret in his farewell speech(그의 고별사에는 후회하는 뉘앙스가 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'overtone'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If something has overtones of a particular thing or quality, it suggests that thing or quality but does not openly express it(어떤 것이 특정한 사물이나 특징의 overtone이 있다면, 그 사물이나 특징을 암시하지만 대놓고 표현하지는 않는 것이다)."

"The strike has taken on overtones of a civil rights campaign(파업은 시민권 운동의 성격을 띄었다)." 

"It's a quite profound story, with powerful religious overtones(종교적 의미가 강한 꽤 심오한 이야기이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'overtone'을 "a quality or feature that is noticeable but not obvious(알아차릴 수 있지만 확실하진 않은 특징 또는 특색)"라고 풀이했다.
