케임브릿지 사전은 'contentious'를 "causing, involving, or likely to cause disagreement and argument(의견 충돌이나 논쟁을 초래하거나, 수반하거나, 초래할 가능성이 높은)"라고 정의했다.

"a contentious decision/policy/issue/subject(논쟁을 초래하기 쉬운 결정/정책/이슈/주제)"

"She has some very contentious views on education(그녀는 교육에 관해 논쟁을 초래할 만한 관점을 가지고 있다)."

"The director had a contentious relationship with the eccentric actor(그 감독은 괴짜 배우와 논쟁을 초래할 만한 관계를 가지고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'contentious'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A contentious issue causes a lot of disagreement or arguments(contentious한 이슈는 많은 의견 충돌이나 논쟁을 불러일으키는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Sanctions are expected to be among the most contentious issues(제재가 가장 논쟁적인 주제들 중 하나가 될 것으로 예상된다)." 

"...a country where land prices are politically contentious(...땅값이 정치적으로 논쟁을 초래하는 나라)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'contentious'를 "causing disagreement between people or groups(사람들 또는 그룹들 사이에서 의견 충돌을 초래하는)"라고 풀이했다.

"Sex education in schools remains a highly contentious issue(학교 성교육은 아주 논쟁을 많이 초래하는 이슈로 남아 있다)."
