케임브릿지 사전은 'caveat'을 "a warning to consider something before taking any more action, or a statement that limits a more general statement(더 이상의 행동을 취하기 전에 어떤 것을 고려하라는 경고, 또는 더욱 일반적인 진술을 제한하는 진술)"라고 정의했다.

"He agreed to the interview, with the caveat that he could approve the final article(그는 인터뷰하기로 동의했으나, 그가 최종 기사에 승인을 내릴 자격이 있어야 한다는 경고를 붙였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'caveat'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A caveat is a warning of a specific limitation of something such as information or an agreement(caveat은 정보나 합의 같은 것을 구체적으로 제한하는 경고이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"I've given it to them, but with the caveat that it didn't work(나는 그것을 그들에게 주었으나, 그게 작동하지 않을 수도 있다는 경고도 덧붙였다)."

"There was one caveat: he was not to enter into a merger or otherwise weaken the Roche family's control of the firm(거기엔 경고가 있었다. 그는 합병에 참여해서는 안 되고, 그러지 않으면 로크 가가 그 기업에 관한 통제력을 약화시킬 거라는 내용이었다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'caveat'을 "a warning of the limits of a particular agreement or statement(특정한 합의 또는 진술을 제한하는 경고)"라고 풀이했다.

"She will be offered radiation treatment – with the caveat that the method has only around a 30% chance of success()그녀는 방사선 치료를 제안받았는데, 그 방법은 오직 30%의 성공률만 있다는 경고도 들었다."
