케임브릿지 사전은 'reticence'를 "an unwillingness to do something or talk about something, for example because you are nervous or being careful(예를 들어 당신이 긴장했거나 조심스럽기 때문에 무엇을 하거나 무엇에 대해 이야기하기 꺼려하는 마음)"이라고 정의했다.

"His reticence about his past made them very suspicious(그가 자신의 과거를 밝히지 않으려하는 태도 때문에 그는 아주 수상해 보였다)."
