케임브릿지 사전은 'muttering'을 "complaints that are made to only a few people(오직 몇 사람들만 들을 수 있게 하는 불평)"이라고 정의했다.

"There are mutterings of discontent among the staff(직원들 사이에 불만족스러운 불평이 돌고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'muttering'을 "criticisms, complaints, or scepticism about someone's ability to do something(누군가가 무엇을 하는 능력에 대한 비평, 불평, 또는 회의)"이라고 설명했다.

"He will lead the party into the election, in spite of the mutterings about his leadership(그의 리더십에 대한 불평에도 불구하고  그는 선거를 위해 당을 이끌 것이다)."

옥스퍼드 사전은 'muttering'을 "complaints that you express privately rather than openly(공개적이라기보단 사적으로 표현하는 불평)"라고 풀이했다.

"There have been mutterings about his leadership(그의 리더십에 대한 불평이 있어 왔다)."
