[영어 공부] tour de force(절묘한 솜씨, 역작)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'tour de force'를 "an achievement or performance that shows great skill and attracts admiration(굉장한 솜씨를 보여 주고 감탄을 일으키는 성취 또는 성과)"이라고 정의했다.

"a technical/musical/political tour de force(기술적/음악적/정치적으로 굉장한 솜씨)"

"The painting/book/film is a tour de force(그 그림/책/영화는 역작이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'tour de force'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you call something such as a performance, speech, or production a tour de force, you are emphasizing that it is extremely good or extremely well done or made(성과나 연설, 또는 제작을 tour de force라고 부르면, 그것이 극히 좋거나 잘 행해졌거나 잘 만들어졌다는 사실을 강조하는 것이다)." 강조(emphasis)하는 표현이다.

"Stevenson's deeply felt performance is a tour-de-force(스티븐슨의 깊은 감정이 담긴 공연은 역작이었다)." 

"His tour de force is an elephant sculpture(그의 역작은 코끼리 조각이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'tour de force'를 "something that impresses people because it is successful and is done very skilfully(성공적이거나 아주 솜씨 좋게 행해졌기 때문에 사람들에게 깊은 인상을 주는 것)"라고 풀이했다.
