케임브릿지 사전은 'cordial'을 "friendly, but formal and polite(친절한, 하지만 격식을 차리고 예의 바른)"라고 정의했다.

"Relations between the two leaders are said to be cordial(두 지도자들 사이의 관계는 다정하다고 하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'cordial'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Cordial means friendly(cordial은 친절하다는 뜻이다)." 

"He had never known him to be so chatty and cordial(그는 그가 그렇게 수다스럽고 다정하다고 생각한 적이 없었다)."
