케임브릿지 사전은 'upward(s) of'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you say something is upward(s) of a number or value, you mean it is at least the stated amount and probably more(어떤 것이 어떤 수나 값보다 upwards라고 한다면, 최소한 언급된 만큼의 수이며 아마도 더 이상이라는 뜻이다)"

"Upwards of 50,000 people assembled in the main square(50,000명 이상의 사람들이 주 광장에 모였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'upward(s) of sth'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A quantity that is upwards of a particular number is more than that number(특정한 숫자의 upwards한 양은 그 숫자 이상이라는 뜻이다)."

"...projects worth upwards of 200 million pounds(...2억 파운드 이상의 가치가 있는 프로젝트들)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'upwards of something'을 "more than the amount or number mentioned(언급된 양이나 수보다 더 많은)"라고 풀이했다.
