케임브릿지 사전은 'retrench'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If governments, companies, etc. retrench, they start spending less money, or reducing costs(정부, 기업 등이 retrench 한다면, 그들이 적은 돈을 쓰기 시작하거나 비용을 줄이기 시작하는 것이다)"

"The company had to retrench because of falling orders(그 기업은 주문이 줄어 비용을 줄여야 했다)."

"The Government began to retrench on its nuclear programmes(정부는 핵 프로그램에 긴축 재정을 실시했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'retrench'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a person or organization retrenches, they spend less money(개인이나 조직이 retrench 한다면, 돈을 덜 쓰는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Shortly afterwards, cuts in defence spending forced the aerospace industry to retrench(그 이후 얼마 지나지 않아, 방위비 삭감은 항공우주 산업이 긴축하게 만들었다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'retrench'를 "to spend less money; to reduce costs(돈을 적게 쓰다; 비용을 줄이다)"라고 풀이했다.
