케임브릿지 사전은 'fob someonf off'를 "to persuade someone to accept something that is of a low quality or different from what they really wanted(어떤 사람으로 하여금 저급이나 그 사람이 진정으로 원하던 것과 다른 것을 받아들이도록 설득하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Well, he wants the report ready by tomorrow but I can always fob him off with some excuse(흠, 그는 내일까지 보고서를 원하는데 난 이래저래 좀 둘러대서 대충 쓴 거 주면 돼)."

콜린스 사전은 'fob off를 "to give someone something that is not what they want or is of worse quality than they want(어떤 사람에게 그가 원하지 않는 것, 또는 그가 원하는 것보다 저급의 것을 주다)"라고 설명했다.

"He was unaware that he was being fobbed off with out-of-date stock(그는 자신이 구형 재고를 넘겨받았다는 사실도 모른다)."
