케임브릿지 사전은 'steal someone's thunder'를 "to do what someone else was going to do before they do it, especially if this takes success or praise away from them(다른 사람이 하려던 것을, 그들이 하기 전에 하다, 특히 그것이 성공이나 칭찬을 그들에게서 빼앗아갈 때 그렇게 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Sandy stole my thunder when she announced that she was pregnant two days before I'd planned to tell people about my pregnancy(샌디는 내가 임신했다는 사실을 다른 사람들에게 말하기로 계획한 날보다 이틀 전에 자신의 임신을 알려서 내가 받을 주목을 빼앗아가 버렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'steal someone's thunder'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you steal someone's thunder, you get the attention or praise that they thought they would get, usually by saying or doing what they had intended to say or do(steal someone's thunder한다면, 대개 그들이 말하거나 하려던 것을 (당신이) 말하거나 함으로써 그들이 받아야 했던 관심이나 칭찬을 당신이 받는 것이다)."

"He had no intention of letting the Foreign Secretary steal any of his thunder(그는 외무 장관이 그의 공을 가로채게 놔둘 의향이 전혀 없었다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'steal somebody's thunder'를 "to get the success and praise someone else should have got, by doing what they had intended to do(다른 사람이 하려던 일을 함으로써 그들이 받아야 하는 성공과 칭찬을 (당신이) 받다)"라고 풀이했다.
