[영어 공부] push the envelope(한계를 초월하다)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'push the envelope'를 "to behave in more extreme ways, or to try new things that have not been acceptable or tried before(더욱 극단적으로 행동하거나 허용되지 않았던, 또는 이전에 시도되지 않았던 새로운 것들을 시도하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Just like every other kid, I pushed the envelope. If I got away with being ten minutes late one night, I might be twenty minutes late the next night(여느 아이들처럼, 나는 한계를 넘어섰다. 어느 날 밤에는 10분 늦고도 별일이 없었다면, 다음 날 밤에는 20분 늦었다)."

롱맨 사전은 'push the envelope'를 "to try to go beyond the normal limits of something(어떤 것의 정상적인 제한 이상을 넘어가려고 노력하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
