케임브릿지 사전은 'desultory'를 "without a clear plan or purpose and showing little effort or interest(명확한 계획이나 목표가 없고 노력이나 관심을 거의 보이지 않는)"라고 정의했다.

"She made a desultory attempt at conversation(그녀는 대화하려는 노력을 거의 하지 않았다)."

"He wandered around, cleaning up in a desultory way(그녀는 대충 물건들을 치우면서 여기저기 돌아다녔다)."

콜린스 사전은 'desultory'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Something that is desultory is done in an unplanned and disorganized way, and without enthusiasm(desultory한 것은 계획되지 않고 체계적이지 않은 방식으로, 별 열의 없이 행해진 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.
