케임브릿지 사전은 'austere'를 "very simple, with only the things that are absolutely necessary, especially because of severe limits on money or goods(특히 돈이나 물품에 심한 제약이 있기 때문에 반드시 필요한 것들만 있는, 아주 단순한)"라고 정의했다.

"an austere childhood during the war(전쟁 시기의 소박한 어린 시절)"

콜린스 사전은 'austere'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as austere, you approve of its plain and simple appearance(어떤 것을 austere하다고 묘사한다면, 그것이 단순하고 소박한 외모를 긍정적으로 인정하는 것이다)."
