케임브릿지 사전은 'give someone the benefit of the doubt'을 "to believe something good about someone, rather than something bad, when you have the possibility of doing either(어떤 사람에 관해, 둘 중 어떤 것이든 할 가능성이 있을 때, 나쁜 것보다는 좋은 것을 믿다)"라고 정의했다.

"I didn't know whether his story was true or not, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt(그의 이야기가 진실인지 아닌지는 몰랐지만, 그의 말을 한번 믿어 보기로 했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'the benefit of the doubt'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you give someone the benefit of the doubt, you treat them as if they are telling the truth or as if they have behaved properly, even though you are not sure that this is the case(give someone the benefit of the doubt 한다면, 그것이 사실인지 확신하지 못하지만, 상대가 진실을 말하거나 적절하게 행동하는 것처럼 대하는 것이다)."
