케임브릿지 사전은 'embellishment'를 "something added to or changed in a story, usually to make it more interesting or exciting, or the act of doing this(대개 이야기를 더욱 흥미롭거나 신나게 만들기 위해 덧붙여지거나 바뀐 것, 또는 이런 행위)"라고 정의했다.

"The news was given bluntly and plainly, without embellishments(그 소식은 직설적으로, 그리고 꾸밈없이, 수식어 없이 전해졌다)."

"He may be guilty of embellishment, but I believe the main point of his story is accurate(그는 이야기를 좀 윤색했을지는 몰라도, 그가 한 이야기의 주요 핵심은 정확하다고 믿는다)."

콜린스 사전은 'embeliishment'를 이렇게 설명했다. "An embellishment is a decoration added to something to make it seem more attractive or interesting(embeliishment는 어떤 것을 더욱 매력적이거나 흥미롭게 만들려고 덧붙여진 장식이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'embellishment'를 "the addition of details to make a story more interesting, even if the details are not true(이야기를 더욱 흥미롭게 만들기 위해, 세부 사항이 사실이 아니라고 하더라도, 덧붙여지는 세부 사항)"라고 풀이했다.
