케임브릿지 사전은 'hold court'를 "to receive a lot of attention from other people who stand or sit around you to listen, especially on a social occasion(당신 주위에 서 있거나 앉아 있는 사람들, 특히 사교 행사에서 다른 사람들에게 많은 관심을 받다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Patrick is holding court at the end table(패트릭은 작은 테이블에서 사람들에게 재미있는 이야기를 들려주고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hold court'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone holds court in a place, they are surrounded by a lot of people who are paying them a lot of attention because they are interesting or famous(어떤 곳에서 누가 hold court 한다면, 그 사람이 흥미롭거나 유명하기 때문에 많은 관심을 주는, 많은 사람들에게 둘러싸여 있는 것이다)."

롱맨 사전은 'hold court'를 "to speak in an interesting, amusing, or forceful way so that people gather to listen(다른 사람들이 모여서 귀기울이도록, 흥미롭게, 재미있게, 또는 강력하게 이야기하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
