케임브릿지 사전은 'ham-fisted'를 "doing things in an awkward or unskilled way when using the hands or dealing with people(손을 사용하거나 타인을 대할 때 어색하거나 특별한 기술이 없이 이런저런 일을 하는)"라고 정의했다.

"The report criticizes the ham-fisted way in which complaints were dealt with(그 보고서는 불만 사항에 대처하는 서투른 방식을 비판한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ham-fisted'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as ham-fisted, you mean that they are clumsy, especially in the way that they use their hands(어떤 사람을 ham-fisted라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 특히 손을 사용하는 데 서투르다는 뜻이다)."
