[영어 공부] on the rocks((관계·사업이) 파탄 직전인)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'on the rocks'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If a relationship is on the rocks, it has problems and is likely to end soon(관계가 on the rocks 하다면, 그것은 문제가 있고 곧 끝날 가능성이 높은 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 on the rocks'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something such as a marriage or a business is on the rocks, it is experiencing very severe difficulties and looks likely to end very soon(결혼이나 사업 같은 것이 on the rocks 하다면, 그것이 아주 심각한 문제를 겪고 있고, 아주 곧 끝날 것 같아 보인다는 뜻이다)."

"She confided to her mother six months ago that her marriage was on the rocks(그녀는 6개월 전 어머니에게 자신의 결혼 생활이 파탄 직전에 있다는 비밀을 털어 놓았다)." 

"Our film industry is on the rocks(우리 영화 산업은 파탄 직전이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'on the rocks'를 "a relationship or business that is on the rocks is having a lot of problems and is likely to fail soon(on the rocks 한 관계 또는 사업은 문제가 많으며 곧 실패할 것 같은 것이다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"I’m afraid Tim’s marriage is on the rocks(팀의 결혼 생활이 파탄 직전에 있어 걱정이다)."
