케임브릿지 사전은 'de rigueur'를 "demanded by fashion, custom, etc.(패션, 관습, 등에 의해 요구되는)"라고 정의했다.

"Where I work, suits are de rigueur for all employees(내가 일하는 곳에서는, 모든 직원들에게 양복이 필수다)."

콜린스 사전은 'de rigueur'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that a possession or habit is de rigueur, you mean that it is fashionable and therefore necessary for anyone who wants to avoid being considered unfashionable(어떤 소유물이나 습관이 de rigueur라고 한다면, 그것이 유행하고 따라서 유행을 따르지 못한다고 여겨지기를 피하고 싶어 하는 사람에게 필수라는 뜻이다)."
