케임브릿지 사전은 'exhort'를 "to strongly encourage or try to persuade someone to do something(어떤 사람이 무엇을 하도록 강하게 촉구하거나 설득하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The governor exhorted the prisoners not to riot(주지사는 재소자들에게 폭동을 일으키지 말 것을 촉구했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'exhort'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you exhort someone to do something, you try hard to persuade or encourage them to do it(어떤 사람에게 무엇을 하라고 exhort 한다면, 그것을 하라고 설득하거나 촉구하려고 노력하는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Kennedy exhorted his listeners to turn away from violence(케네디는 청자들에게 폭력을 그만둘 것을 촉구했다)."

"He exhorted his companions, 'Try to accomplish your aim with diligence.'(그는 동반자들에게 '목표를 성취하기 위해 근면하게 노력하라'라고 촉구했다)"
