케임브릿지 사전은 'cavernous'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If something is cavernous, there is a very large open space inside it(어떤 것이 cavernous하다면, 그 안에 아주 넓은, 트인 공간이 있다는 뜻이다)"

"a cavernous 4,000-seat theatre(동굴 같은, 4,000석의 극장)"

콜린스 사전은 'cavernous'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A cavernous room or building is very large inside, and so it reminds you of a cave(cavernous한 방 또는 건물은 안이 아주 넓고, 따라서 동굴을 연상시키는 것이다)."

"The work space is a bare and cavernous warehouse(작업 공간은 텅 비고 휑뎅그렁한 창고다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'cavernous'를 "(of a room or space) very large and often empty and/or dark; like a cave((방이나 공간이) 아주 넓고 대개 텅 비어 있고/또한 어두운; 동굴 같은)"라고 풀이했다.
