케임브릿지 사전은 'color'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If something or someone colors your thoughts or opinions, it influences them, often in a negative way(어떤 사물 또는 사람이 당신의 생각이나 의견을 color 한다면, 그것에 영향을 미치는 것인데, 대체로 부정적으로 그렇게 하는 것이다)"

"The report is colored by the fiscal crises of the last four years(그 보고서는 지난 4년의 국가 재정 위기에 영향을 받았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'color'를 "to give a special character or distinguishing quality to(~에 특별한 특징 또는 특징적인 자질을 부여하다)"라고 설명했다.

"His personal feelings color his writing(그의 개인적인 감정이 그의 글에 영향을 미쳤다)"

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'color'를 "to affect something, especially in a negative way(어떤 것에 영향을 미치다, 특히 부정적으로 그렇게 하다)"라고 풀이했다.
