케임브릿지 사전은 'remiss'를 "careless and not doing a duty well enough(부주의하고 의무를 잘 지키지 못하는)"라고 정의했다.

"You have been remiss in your duties(네 의무에 태만했구나)."

"It was remiss of me to forget to give you the message(네게 메시지 남긴다는 걸 깜빡하다니 내가 태만했어)."

콜린스 사전은 'remiss'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone is remiss, they are careless about doing things which ought to be done(누군가가 remiss 하다면, 해야 하는 일을 하는 데 부주의한 것이다)." 격식을 차린 표현이다.

"I would be remiss if I did not do something about it(그에 대해 무언가 하지 않는다면 내가 태만한 거겠지)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'remiss'를 "not giving something enough care and attention(어떤 것에 충분한 관심과 주의를 기울이지 않는)"이라고 풀이했다.

"It was remiss of them not to inform us of these changes sooner(그 변화를 더 일찍 우리에게 알리지 않은 그들이 태만했다)."

"She had clearly been remiss in her duty(그녀는 분명히 자신의 의무에 태만했다)."
